On May 16, 2025, the competition-exhibition “Artists of Ogre Region” was opened at the Ogre History and Art Museum.

The winner of the exhibition “Artists of the Ogre Region” was Dārta Madara Cielava with the work “Grandpa Doesn’t Know My Name.” The recipient of the main prize earned the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in 2026 in the museum’s Great Hall.

About her upcoming exhibition, the artist says:

“Everyday rhythm leaves its traces in the environment around us. The meaning of objects in life is no longer purely practical. Space is not just space. Within it, an object becomes a reference point of human attachment. It tells a story about its user and keeper, about habits, about socioeconomic status. Daily experiences leave their imprint on the environment we maintain around ourselves. It is a diary that holds what cannot be expressed in words. I am an anthropologist. I am a detective. I know myself differently. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say I know myself less than those who deduce, research, observe. You look at me like a bird locked in a cage through screens, paintings, and loudly declared theses in moments when I do not play along with the staged performance of my own persona.

I am a student; I have school, work, and home. And at home I also work—I paint, write, send endless chains of emails. Routine emerges from comfort and the combination of small problems and joys.

I am affected by expensive heating in a rental building; I am affected by foolish, thoughtless remarks made by people whose staged performances we are all subjected to. My bed is my safety—it is like the origin point of a coordinate plane. I am not untouchable; I am in a cage I have built myself. When I step out of it, a new act begins.”

In her works, the artist perceives each object as a sign or a word. Nothing is accidental. Compositions form naturally; the artist assigns them context, seeking correlations between the physical and its emotional foundation. There are not answers to everything—it is important to accept that.

The exhibition searches for the boundary between the personal and the public. The paintings become a place where silence and information overload collide, revealing how conditional and fluid our understanding of private space is today. The body of work forms a reflection on social structure, our mechanisms of adaptation, and the tension between the collective and the individual—creating a distinctive documentation of the era.

In the paintings, impasto brushstrokes and vivid colors interact with bare areas of linen canvas, allowing the detail-rich works to breathe. What remains unpainted stays in shadow; its existence is neither emphasized nor diminished. Within the overall context, it becomes an axis of balance—important, yet forgotten.

Although the artist is trained as a painter, more unconventional media often find their way into her works and collections. Materiality plays a significant role in her practice; every choice of technique and material is grounded in intention. Painting evolves into an ideological practice, becoming a language without attempting to confine itself strictly to a medium or a conventional form.

The exhibition will be open at the Ogre History and Art Museum from July 3.

On July 3 at 6:00 PM, the solo exhibition “Belongings” by artist Dārta Madara Cielava will be opened at the Ogre History and Art Museum.

The exhibition explores the boundary between the personal and the public. The paintings become a space where silence and information overload collide, revealing how conditional and fluid our understanding of private space is today. The body of work forms a reflection on social structure, our adaptation mechanisms, and collective and individual tension, creating a unique documentation of the era.

Dārta Madara Cielava studies at a Master’s program in painting. Although the artist is a painter by education, other media and materials also play a significant role in her practice. Each technical solution is chosen deliberately, as painting becomes a language that freely transcends the boundaries of a single medium.

The author of the exhibition reflects: “I am a student; I have school, work, and home. And at home, I also work, paint, write, and send endless rows of emails. Routine arises from comfort and the connection of small problems and joys. I am affected by expensive heating in a rental house; I am affected by stupid, ill-considered expressions uttered by people whose staged plays we are all subjected to. My bed is my safety; it is like the starting point of a coordinate plane. I am not untouchable; I am in a cage of my own building. Stepping out of it, a new act begins.”

In her works, Dārta Madara Cielava perceives everyday objects as signs that form a personal visual language. Compositions are formed intuitively, seeking connections between the visible and the experienced, between the physical environment and its emotional resonance. The artist does not try to provide unambiguous answers but rather draws attention to questions and experiences that characterize the daily life of a modern person. In the paintings, impasto brushstrokes, bright colors, and unpainted areas of linen canvas intermingle. This contrast creates a balance between presence and absence, allowing meaning to form not only in what is depicted but also in what remains unsaid.

Dārta Madara Cielava became the laureate of the 2025 competition exhibition “Artists of Ogre Municipality” with the work “Grandpa Doesn’t Know My Name,” which depicted a personal story of the artist. The jury commission consisted of Māris Grosbahs, curator of exhibitions at the Ogre History and Art Museum, photographer Georgs Avetisjans, art historian Māra Lāss, graphic artist and art historian Valdis Villerušs, and scenographer and multimedia artist Ineta Sipunova. The winner of the competition’s main prize received the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in 2026 in the museum’s Great Hall. Through the work “Grandpa Doesn’t Know My Name,” the author touches upon a relevant and new theme in Latvian painting—dementia. It is important for the Ogre History and Art Museum to support young artists from the region, promote their professional growth, and enhance the visibility of their work in the broader cultural space.

The exhibition will be open to visitors from July 3 to September 27.

On the opening day of the exhibition, admission is free.

From April 17 to July 12

The exhibition “Between Two Occupations” tells about events in the Ogre region from June 22 to July 6, 1941. It was a time when the troops and officials of the communist occupation regime were leaving the territory of Latvia, while the period of Nazi occupation had not yet begun.
It was a complex and chaotic time, characterized by uncertainty, looting, deaths caused by military actions, and the murder of civilians. At the same time, it was also a moment of bold and sometimes desperate hope, when many inhabitants of Latvia, with weapons in their hands, tried to drive the communist occupation regime from their land, believing that the worst was already behind them.

2026. 13.03. – 21.06.2026

Ārija Skudra’s first personal exhibition introduces an artist who worked as a designer at the Hat and Felt Products Factory “Rīgas Filcs” for many years, where she created standard hat models that were later mass-produced for society at large – for children, women of various age groups, and men. As a result, it can be said that for several decades a large part of Latvia’s population wore hats designed by Ārija Skudra.

The artist’s designs were regularly featured in fashion shows organised by the Riga Fashion House; however, her name – like those of many designers working with mass-produced items – remained unmentioned. This exhibition is therefore a deliberate step towards inscribing Ārija Skudra’s name into the history of Latvian design of the second half of the 20th century.

Ārija Skudra received secondary art education at the J. Rozentāls Riga Art High School but was unable to pursue higher education. Alongside her work as a designer, she developed a second field of creative activity – painting. She participated not in the professional art scene, but in exhibitions organised by amateur artists, presenting landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figurative compositions executed in oil.

Her most significant artistic achievement, however, lies in her work with the batik technique, which she practised from the 1970s until the beginning of the 21st century. These works are distinctly decorative, characterised by a virtuoso rhythm of lines and a high degree of generalisation in both natural and human motifs.

The exhibition features selected press photographs, materials from Riga Fashion House magazines, and a collection of the artist’s batik works.

Exhibition curator: Irēna Bužinska

Exhibition scenographer: Ineta Sipunova

The museum’s permanent exhibition presents the story of the city of Ogre across many centuries through visual and interactive means, using digital technologies such as projections, sound showers, interactive maps, and video and audio materials.

Accompanied by a museum educator, students become acquainted with the history of their city through the exhibition, learning about its earliest inhabitants and the settlement on Ķente Hillfort.

An interactive LED map helps students better understand Ogre’s former territorial divisions, while sound showers featuring clashing swords or volleys of gunfire immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages or the First World War.

During the activity, students also learn about the stories of visitors to Ogre’s renowned air and bathing resort, as well as the successes and challenges of the notable Soviet-era enterprise, the Ogre Knitwear Factory.

Following an introduction led by the museum educator, students work in teams to view, research, and explore historical exhibits, placing them within the appropriate historical periods of the exhibition. The activity also includes creative worksheet-based modelling tasks that engage all participants.

Benefits of the activity: participants gain knowledge of Ogre’s history, develop teamwork skills, and learn to respect and listen to different viewpoints, thereby strengthening collaboration and team spirit.
Embark on a creative and educational journey to discover natural geoprocesses and the unique natural and cultural environment of the Ogre region. Experience how the environment has changed over time – and how you, too, change along with it.

* In the workshop “The Creation of My Tree”, participants draw their own tree using the neurographic technique – a creative drawing method that combines art and psychology. Through free lines and shapes, the process helps express feelings and emotions, encourages reflective thinking, and reduces stress. The workshop is led by a certified neurography specialist.
* The tree, as a symbol, reveals the unity of nature and humanity – a process of continuous formation and transformation. Through the exploration of natural processes and personal experience, the growth of a tree is compared to a person’s path of self-development.
Content by age group:

• Grades 1–5 (45 min.): Who I am and who I want to become; the name of my tree; power words for the tree.

• Grades 5–9 (60 min.): Life stages of a tree and a human; environment and cooperation; power words (Me – Me/Community – Us).

• Grade 9 and adults (90 min.): Life timeline; growth and future planning; the meaning of one’s “My Tree” in society; a short one-to-one reflection.

The museum provides materials for the workshop.

From 07.06.2025 until 28.09.2025.
Brīvības Street 36, Ogre.

Ogre History and Art Museum will open Dace Voitkevica’s solo exhibition “Boy, Listen!”

The exhibition “Boy, Listen!” is a personal visual story by photographer Dace Voitkeviča, featuring interactive elements that explore a child’s life with autism spectrum disorder. Challenges related to the autism spectrum are often invisible, yet greater societal understanding can significantly promote support for diverse needs.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 On June 7, Ogre celebrates Family Day with a special programme. The museum believes it is important to engage the community in this conversation and to promote family values, with particular attention to children with special needs and their families.

The environment of the Ogre History and Art Museum is accessible and suitable for visitors with functional disabilities.

🗣️ The author of the exhibition notes: “Sometimes support doesn’t require much – just an understanding of the challenges that people with autism face every day.”

✅ The exhibition will be open to visitors from June 7 until September 28. Admission is free on the opening day.
