National Resistance Movement Commemoration Event

21.03.2026.

On March 21, an event dedicated to the remembrance of the national resistance movement took place in the museum building at 2 Brīvības Street, within the “Road to Freedom” exhibition space. During the event, a discussion was held with members of the Latvian Independence Movement, Jānis Rožkalns and Jānis Vēveris, regarding resistance to the regime in the early 1980s. Both participated in various anti-Soviet actions, and in 1983, the Supreme Court of the Latvian SSR sentenced them to imprisonment.

During the discussion, a handmade flag of the Republic of Latvia, which had been hidden by members of the Latvian Independence Movement in the early 1980s, was donated to the museum.

The event also commemorated national resistance member Bruno Javoišs and his heroic deed. The story of B. Javoišs can be found in the “Road to Freedom” exhibition.
