The four artists participating in the exhibition Nearby (Tuvumā) are united by the strongest of bonds. Their works reflect on humanity across time and space – a shared belonging to one family, like a single tree whose trunk bears the traces of annual rings, growing lush with new branches and ever-renewing greenery. Its seeds scatter in the wind, take root in the dark earth, and new shoots emerge. This continuity is expressed through sculpture, textile art, photography and painting.
Vija Ilze Dzintare – Sculptor or a Painter in Stone
The artist engages with themes that are deeply significant to her – as a human being, as a woman and as a Latvian. Observing her work, the core of her message becomes clear: woman as the giver, sustainer and guardian of life. Her art also conveys the conviction that every individual is a unique value – an inseparable link in the ongoing journey of humanity.
Vija Dzintare works in both monumental and easel sculpture, creating portraits, small-scale works and medals. She chooses substantial and enduring materials – bronze, granite, marble and aluminium. Her works speak in a gentle and soulful artistic language, one characteristic of a loving mother and a warm-hearted grandmother.
Ieva Dzintare – Textile Artist or a Diverse Texture Weaver
Ieva Dzintare graduated from the Textile Art Department of the Art Academy of Latvia in 1998. She has participated in exhibitions since 1991, holding two solo exhibitions and taking part in numerous group exhibitions both in Latvia and abroad. In addition to her passion for working with textile materials, she has contributed to the creation of significant audiovisual projects and works as a graphic designer in advertising.
Rūta Kalmuka – Photographer, Capturing Moments
Rūta Kalmuka has participated in group exhibitions since 1994 and has held four solo exhibitions, two of which took place at the Latvian Museum of Photography. In 2006, she won 2nd place in the documentary category of the Latvian Annual Photography Award, and in 2011 she received 1st place in the children’s portrait category at the Baltic Portrait Photo Contest.
Dārta Kalmuka – Multimedia Artist, Capturing the Essential in Its Various Manifestations
Dārta Kalmuka graduated from the Audiovisual Media Art Department of the Art Academy of Latvia. Since 2012, she has been actively involved in various projects in graphic design, window display design, photography and film. Since 2016, she has dedicated herself to a self-initiated project – a photographic story about Latvian street artists.
In the creative expressions presented in the Nearby exhibition, a shared desire is evident: to convey, through diverse artistic means, the quintessence of the cosmic and the human – time, space, and the people within them. Although each work is distinct, together they intertwine into a unified whole, reflecting the natural interconnectedness and interdependence of all things.
